I was skeptical of this purchased but after having so many problems with my Kitchen Aid I decided to give it a try. Boy am I glad I did. This mixer is a dream. It is much quieter than my old Kitchen Aid and it is more powerful. I have mixed everything from bread, to donuts and I even mixed pizza dough that required you use the paddle not the hook on high and it powered through. With the lower price it is a no brainer to buy this mixer. It will take a lot for me to change to another mixer. -- Finaly some competion for KitchenAid

I just rec'd the mixer & have not used it yet but wanted to submit an initial review since I ran into the same issue some others have mentioned: Although the product description clearly states it has "12 speed settings," it does not. Yes, the speeds settings are labeled 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 but there are not stops between those even numbers. This model is a 6-speed mixer - not 12.

The unit appears to be fairly sturdy so I will give it 3 stars for now & submit an update after I've used it a few times. -- Not Quite as Described

I bought this mixer after much reading and comparison shopping. It came down to the H.B-E or Kitchen Aid. Side by side, the Hamilton Beach seemed to be the better deal: bigger motor, better warrantee, attachments included, and less expensive. So far, I have used the mixer to mix and knead bread dough for 10 or 12 loaves of bread (that was the reason I bought it). So far it has been great and takes a whole lot of hard work out of the process. I love it. -- Great Mixer

The mixer I bought 6 month ago stopped working today. We didn't use very often, may be once in a month at average for mixing pancakes. I contacted the customer service by phone and spent 20 minutes trying to get "No-Hassle Replacement Warranty" as described in my warranty information. First lady I spooked to gave me customer number and told that I have to send them check for $15.75 and the plug from the mixer. When I asked the lady why the warranty instruction says that it will be "at no cost to you" she told me that I can send them only $7.75. When I asked her if I can discuss this with a manager she connected me to another lady who introduced herself as "corporate manager" but refused to give her name. I asked her how can I get the replacement at "no cost as" it's promised she reconnected me to the third lady who told me that I will have to send them whole unit instead of just the plug. She also told me that I should include each and every attachments and the tone of her voice was saying that I will regret that I asked them for the free replacement shipping. It doesn't feel like "No-Hassle" to me. I will update this post as the replacement progresses.
Update 1:
I've got the call from HB customer service next morning. They apologized for this story and told me that their representative was not trained appropriately and they will retrain her. They also told me that they shipped replacement and the UPS label for returning the broken unit. I'm adding two stars for the product and changing the title, because we were happy with the mixer before it has broken.
Update 2:
The replacement unit worked only once. The second time we turned it on, speed regulator didn't work. It was rotating very fast on the lowest #2 speed, as fast as it usually does on speed #8 or #10. The customer service communicated to me that the replacement unit will not be under the same 3 years warranty as the one I bought from Amazon. This is strange and there is no such information in the manual. I remove back two stars from the rate.
Update 3:
The second replacement worked twice to mix pancakes dough. On the third time it just didn't start. I have to replace it again. It looks like the quality of the mixers had worsened dramatically since I got my first mixer that worked for 6 month. -- Poor quality and bad customer service.

Nobody ever expects Valentino Rossi’s season to be without its fair share of pivotal moments, but the first half of the reigning World Champion’s 2010 campaign must go down as one of the most eventful of his illustrious career to date. Victory in round one, despair in injury and a highly impressive return to action have all been packed into the opening nine rounds by the 31 year-old Italian.

Starting the defence of his title with a win in Qatar Rossi began his quest for an eighth premier class title in the perfect manner, but a motocross training accident shortly after resulted in an injured shoulder which was to continue troubling him for some time. Pain proved no insurmountable obstacle however and third place at Jerez in the next round proved Rossi’s determination. Second place behind team-mate Jorge Lorenzo at Le Mans in round three maintained his solid start as another intense battle between the pair formed early in the campaign.

Eager to secure a second win of the season in his home race at Mugello disaster struck in the second practice session as a crash resulted in a fractured right tibia and fibula, an injury which was to rule Rossi out for four races, a considerably shorter period than had first been suggested. It also brought to an end his record breaking run of 230 successive Grand Prix starts, having never missed a race since his World Championship debut in 1996.

Back on two wheels a little over four weeks after the injury Rossi tested a superbike at Misano at the start of July, and a few days later a second day at Brno led to a decision by the rider and his Fiat Yamaha team to attempt a comeback at Sachsenring. Just six weeks after breaking his leg The Doctor rode to fourth position in the race, losing out on a podium spot only on the final corner of the last lap.

Completing a remarkable comeback Rossi placed third in the next race at Laguna Seca, refusing to hold back in his effort to get his campaign back on course. Fifth in the standings on 90 points, some 120 off leader Lorenzo, the title looks beyond his grasp in 2010 but few would be surprised if Rossi mounted an impressive attempt at recovering lost ground over the remaining nine rounds.

Economist on Kindle High Quality Content, Looks Great on Kindle

The Economist is arguably the most prestigious mass publication on economics, political, social, and global matters. The articles can be intensely enriching, educational, and thoughtful. If you are looking for a light read on everyday pop culture and celebrities, stay away from this world class magazine that is written by and caters to the intellectuals. This is the magazine many high schools recommend to their students who want to improve their reading to a college level. Its articles may confound those whose most challenging read has been the Mad Magazine and the National Enquirer.

The Economist is an excellent magazine for anyone who is interested in not only the US economy, but the global economy. I find all the articles to be well written and not one sided like many other magazines. I find that a great deal of research has been done to write engaging articles that don't put me to sleep.

By no means am I in finance; however, I enjoy keeping abreast with world news.

I love the Economist, and I think the Kindle edition is (almost) worth the cost, though I do wish it was a bit cheaper. The format on the Kindle is very easy to navigate and read; they've done a nice job. The photos and graphics are the weakest part; the resolution is poor. I think they could probably do a better job of rendering them for the Kindle. However, I focus on the text, so it doesn't bother me much. I would buy a Kindle just to read the Economist

This guy is pretty reliable - I'd say on average there are about 50-60 free book recommendations each month, with a large variety of topics such as sci fi, mystery, romance, even the strange and unusual. I don't download all of them, as I don't think I have that much time to read.

One thing that seems to differntiate this blog from the others on here touting free books is the blog author is not dependent upon Amazon-only titles. Sure, he will tell you most of the free titles offered here on Amazon as that is easay for you and me to download, but he also tells you of other interesting independent author titles from non-Amazon sites with something unique: he includes instructions on how to get those non-Amazon titles to your Kindle.

There's usually a tip or two each week: some I have seen before and some are brand new to me such as I never thought to put my phone number as part of my Kindle ID in case I lost it during my latest trip to the airport.

99 cents for this blog is money well spent!

I picked this skillet up as a gift for my fiance and we both just love it! The weekend I gave it to him we were off camping and took it with us… we cooked everything that weekend in it. We use this skillet now more than any other pan in the house.

If you are looking for a pan that is truly non-stick, this is it, without all the toxic coatings of teflon etc…this is what our ancestors used. It also is great if you have anemia, cooking in these iron pans aid in building the blood as well. My daughter, whom I bought it for school, has grown up with only cast iron pans, only made in the U.S.A. and she loves this one. A must for cooks of all sorts. Just keep it oiled and rust free by washing without soap, just water, heat up on the stove to dry and touch up with a paper towel and oil now and then. The best!!

I have owned this 12 in skillet for a little more than two years now. It is second to none in my kitchen; by far it has made my cooking that much better! The care and maintenance is simple enough, that I bought this pan its own little soft scrub brush with a built in soft plastic scraper. Makes clean up easy! This pan is going to live forever! The only drawback is finding an accompanying lid. There were no lids available for purchase, perhaps because the demand may not be high enough in my area, or (?). It’s strange to me that the lid (found online) costs more than what I paid for the pan itself. :^/

All in all, a highly recommended investment for cookware that will last for many years to come.

Valentino Rossi Come Back - at Sachsenring this weekend

Valentino Rossi completed a test ride at the Brno circuit on Monday July 12 ,2010 on board a YZF-R1 world superbike machine, as he and the Fiat Yamaha team made further assessments of the Italian’s current physical condition.

Ending the test having completed 46 laps and with a best time in the 1’59.1 region the World Champion reported that he felt less pain than he had done following last Wednesday’s outing at Misano, which was his first time back on two wheels since he fractured his right tibia at Mugello at the start of June.

“I’m very happy with how it went, I felt much better than in Misano – last week was pretty hard but I feel better and better and we have had five days between those two tests. This time my knee and shoulder didn’t hurt as much,” said Rossi on Monday evening.

A decision on whether the 31 year-old will make his competitive return at Sachsenring this weekend will be made on Wednesday, after he has X-rays to measure the stage of the recovery of the fracture in his right leg.

“Now I’ll have to wait to take a decision on Wednesday after we have some X-rays as to whether I race or not in Germany. Doing a full race will be a different story, but I still have another couple of days to get a bit better,” commented Rossi.

“Racing in the next two races would be important in order to be in good shape in Brno (on August 15th), however I think we’ll have to wait until Misano (on September 5th) to be fully competitive.”

You don't need to read this biography: Let me sum it up for you

"Hi, my name is Tiger Woods. I was a great golfer, I won a Masters or two, and everybody loved me and thought I was the coolest, and then I cheated with some chicks and my wife found out, we got divorced and I became the butt of everybody's joke, from Saturday Night Live to various talk shows to the radio and much, much more. Then, I tried to make a comeback and I was a shadow of the golfer I once was. Now, some dude who knew how to make good money off of this sad tale wrote a book about it. THE END"

If you're a golfer, nothing new

I've been golfing about 25 years now and have regularly been a fan of the PGA Tour. Consequently, there is nothing about Tiger Woods in this book that I already didn't know. I learned a little about his mother and father, but to me it was irrelevant. If you are not a golfer, this book may give you a little insight into Tiger's past. Anything you may want to know since last Thanksgiving, you can get more than enough from news reports on the internet, People mag, US mag, etc. Also, way too much ink is wasted on the transcript of Tiger's public apology. I plan on buying Unplayable: An Inside Account of Tiger's Most Tumultuous Season by Robert Lusetich and hope I will get more insight as to what made/makes Tiger tick. The reviews look promising.

Tiger Woods had captured the heart of this nation, but does this mean we have any right to judge him? Or even comment on his private life? What does he owe us, his fans? From his childhood, he epitomized the "anyone can make it" mantra. I knew a lot of the information, but a lot I did not. I don't think this was a judgemental book, just informative, which is what I was looking for. I truly feel sorry for Tiger, he obviously lost his way, but it was well worth reading for the background, his parents, his home life, his time in school and an insight into what a gifted person does or does not owe to his public. Well worth a read.

I had already read, and listened to, this sensationalist garbage a thousand times over, as everyone and their mother tries to make money on this story - nothing new. I will never understand how we love to build up and put people on a pedestal, only to smile in glee as we then destroy them.

Fiat Yamaha Team rider Valentino Rossi today rode a motorcycle for the first time since breaking his right leg at Mugello on 5th June.

Rossi rode a total of 26 laps at Misano on a YZF-R1 WSB machine, provided by the Yamaha World Superbike Team, and recorded a best time of 1'38.200. Rossi did an initial run of 11 laps at 18.30 CET with a best time of 1'41.000, then a second run of 15 laps at 19.45 CET with a best time of 1'38.200 (unofficial times).

The reigning World Champion was able to ride well but he had some pain in his leg and his shoulder. He will now continue with an updated rehabilitation programme and make a decision within the next week as to whether he will ride at the German Grand Prix at Sachsenring, in ten days time.

"We made this test in order to understand how we must work from here and to see more or less how I can ride the bike," said Rossi. "The test was positive, because I can at least ride, but there is a lot more to a MotoGP race than to a test like this one. I had some pain in the ankle, the knee and the shoulder, but above all I lacked strength in the shoulder and a bit of movement in the ankle. I would really like to come back at Sachsenring, but it is still too early to say. We still have twelve days and we must wait and see how much we can improve my condition in the next few days. The Superbike today was good and great fun to ride! I really would like to ride at Sachsenring, but we must wait another week before making a decision."

Red Bull’s Mark Webber says he is fit and well, and raring to go this weekend, less than 14 days after his horrendous back flip in the European Grand Prix in Valencia.

The Spanish and Monaco Grand Prix winner confirmed that there have been no ill effects. “I’m over it, let’s move on to Silverstone,” he said. “I had a bit of whiplash. I knew straight away that I’d hit my big toe pretty hard. But I didn’t even know I was upside down, to be honest. It happened so quickly. I was very mindful that I should let go of the wheel, but I wanted to keep my arms in the car.”

Speaking of the cause of the accident, he added: “It definitely takes two to have that accident. I’ve been in his (Heikki Kovalainen’s) situation, with Minardi, and I learned that if you fight the quick guys you always lose more time. But everyone’s entitled to have a fight. I thought that he was cooperating, then I realised that he was going to defend…”

Webber will race a replacement chassis this weekend, the one which Sebastian Vettel used to win with in Malaysia. The old one is already being repaired at the Red Bull factory in Milton Keynes. “My number one mechanic, ‘Crunch,’ (Mark Lenton) left a note in it which read: ‘You gave me the best day of my life, and also saved my mate,’” Webber revealed.

The Australian also said that he believes it likely over the course of time that McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will have a similar incident to the one he had with Vettel in Turkey, simply because of the pressures of this high-stakes game.

“They’ve been working very hard with smoke and mirrors with Lewis and Jenson at McLaren,” he said. “They get on, but if they are always racing at the front it’s inevitable that something is going to happen, because of what’s at stake and because both are hungry drivers. Our whole team learned from the incident in Turkey. It was a new experience for us. But 80 percent of the grid would give their right arm to be in a similar position, with two guys fighting at the front. It’s unlikely to happen again.”

But he did not to discount it totally…

“Seb and I are pretty good,” he went on, describing the relationship with his team mate. “If he was drowning in the ocean I’d go in and save him. But it’s totally natural that there will be rivalry. If you are like Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen at Lotus there isn’t so much at stake right now, but look at Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell, when they were at Williams in the Eighties. They were both at the front and were both trying to win, and there was healthy rivalry. It’s not possible in that situation to have a beautiful fuzzy relationship because the other guy is your competitor.”

Webber doesn’t discount Ferrari this weekend but believes that Red Bull’s strongest challenge will come from McLaren. “We know Jenson and Lewis will be there, that’s totally obvious. We know that. But it’ll be a top four at least, because Seb and I will be there too, for sure. I’d be very happy to win the British Grand Prix. It’s a prestigious event. I know the home crowd will be rooting for Lewis and Jenson, but I’ve always got on pretty well with the British fans. We have as good a chance as anyone of winning on Sunday afternoon.”

Meanwhile, it was confirmed last night that Sakon Yamamoto will race in Bruno Senna’s place this weekend for HRT.

A New Kindle DX will become available on July 7 ; doesn't offer much new

Amazon introduced a next-generation Kindle DX e-reader today, one that not only comes with a better display contrast but also a lower price tag - down from $489 to $379 now.

A price drop is always nice for consumers. And I’m sure the new display is nicer on the eyes. But are these the features that critics asked for? Going back to Larry Dignan’s initial assessment of the Kindle DX, it appears that Amazon hasn’t really done much to differentiate this DX from the earlier generation.

In his post from this time last year, Larry cited four things he’d like to see in a next-gen Kindle: a touch display, a better browser, a bit lighter in weight and, of course, WiFi. None of those things were announced by the company today, though. The device is still tied to 3G wireless, with no contracts required, but still no WiFi. The weight is still 18.9 ounces and there was no word about a touch display or a better browser.

So basically what you’re looking at is a nicer-screen Kindle for $379.

I haven’t been a fan of the Kindle since its initial release, largely because they’re just high-priced book readers that don’t do much more than that. Do they play video? No. Are they doubling as music jukeboxes? No. Can I sync my pictures to it? No.

More importantly, Amazon continues to diminish the need for a Kindle to read books purchased through the Kindle store by offering free Kindle apps for PCs, Macs and smartphones, most recently for Android devices.

At this point, given the “updates” that are coming with this next verison of the Kindle DX, I’d still opt for a free app - and keep my $379 in my pocket.

This is a busy week , On Monday the Amazon Kindle announced that it will begin selling the new e-books, which is an integrated audio and video. Tuesday, Amazon also has a free application Kindle version of the Google Android mobile phone launched.

Continuing its e-books everywhere approach to digital reading, the company announced on Wednesday in a blog post that it would soon offer a product called “Kindle Previewer for HTML 5″ that will allow readers to view samples of books directly from within a Web browser.

Amazon can send previously asked readers to the test tray are available.

Back on home soil and with a heavily upgraded car, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was convinced he would get his title campaign back on course at last weekend’s European Grand Prix, but things didn’t quite go to plan. Alonso left Valencia frustrated and disappointed with his eighth-place result. However, after some reflection, the Spaniard is ready to refocus his energies on the forthcoming British race.

“I was very angry about everything that happened, but now that anger has been transformed into positive energy driving a desire to fight back,” he explained in his Ferrari post-race diary. “Right from yesterday morning, my mind was already focused on the next Grand Prix at Silverstone, where we will try and channel all that accumulated energy into the car to try and make up for what escaped us, for one reason or another, in Valencia.”

Up until the safety car following Mark Webber’s vicious accident in the Red Bull on Lap Nine, everything had been going swimmingly for the double world champion. From fourth on the grid he was racing in third and applying pressure to the second-placed McLaren of Lewis Hamilton. As the medical car for Webber emerged from the pit lane, Hamilton edged past and sped away to his pit stop.

Alonso, meanwhile, stayed behind and made much slower progress to the pit lane. He eventually emerged from his tyre change down in tenth, whilst his team mate Felipe Massa came out a lowly 17th. Although Hamilton was eventually handed a drive-through penalty for overtaking the safety car, he still managed to retain his second place.

During and following the race Alonso couldn’t hide his frustration with the stewards and the British driver, but following a night’s sleep he was determined to push the thoughts from his mind and refocus on the forthcoming British Grand Prix.

“The safety car appeared at the worst possible moment for us and completely ruined our race,” he said. “It would have only needed a few seconds more or less to totally change our race. It does not achieve much going over the events that followed on. Obviously, in the clear light of day, I am much calmer than I was in the moments immediately following the race.

“At the time, I reacted emotionally and in that situation, it is all too easy to adopt a tone and say things that can be interpreted wrongly, giving rise to suspicions, something which I had no intention of doing. Sure, I understand that the stewards have a difficult job to do and they have to take decisions that are not easy.

“What I meant was that those drivers who, like us, respected the regulations, unfortunately, in this situation, suffered much more than those who broke them, even though they were given a penalty. And I am not referring to any of the drivers in particular. It’s a general matter and I think we should talk about it together in a calm way, to ensure that things like this do not happen again.”

In terms of the championship too, Alonso is positive. He’s currently fifth in the standings (29 points adrift of leader Hamilton), but with the F10 responding well to its updates and another 10 Grands Prix left to run, the Spaniard has not given up hope of clinching the title.

“Even if the Valencia result was not what we wanted, it has not done irreparable damage,” he concluded. “It’s true that the gap to the leader has now jumped to 29 points, but we have not even reached the halfway point of the season. Jorge Lorenzo is in a relaxed mood as round seven of the 2010 MotoGP World Championship approaches this weekend, with the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya completing a gruelling series of three back-to-back races.

The busy schedule does not appear to have taken too much of a toll on the 23 year-old Fiat Yamaha rider however, and he leads the Championship standings by 47 points having won the last two races, which came in quick succession at Silverstone and Assen.

Now heading into his home race the Spaniard knows that he is in a position of great strength, and the pressure is on his rivals to recover ground. “We’re 47 points ahead of second place in the Championship, so this means we can finish second or third, but the others must win all the races from now until the end of the Championship. Of course we will try to win but if not we will try to finish the race,” explained Lorenzo to motogp.com.

“In theory Pedrosa is the favourite apart from us as he is second in the Championship, so together with Stoner he is the most dangerous. But every race is different so we will see what happens.”

Last year’s race produced what was widely regarded as the contest of the season, as Lorenzo and team-mate Valentino Rossi – who remains out through injury this time around – battled to the bitter end for victory. The Italian won the fight, but Lorenzo expects others to provide a stern challenge in the 31 year-old’s continued absence.

“Last year I had the chance to win but Valentino was cleverer than me in the last corner, he overtook me at the very end and I finished second,” he said. “This year without him there is one less rider, but the other riders and the other factories are very competitive so to win we will have to fight from the beginning until the last lap of the race.”

Lorenzo may be happy with a podium finish on his home circuit this season, but deep down will be eager to win in front of his own fans on a track he is yet to be victorious on in the premier class. Last year’s second place is his best MotoGP result at Montmeló to date, but he did take victory there on his way to the 250cc title in 2007.
